Part of the guide: Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing tools are all over the internet, each claiming to be better than the rest. But as a newbie affiliate marketer, you are overwhelmed by all this information. You need some help to get started. Today’s post is geared at walking you through the 4 basic affiliate marketing tools, without which you dare not venture into the affiliate marketing jungle. So here we go:
Own Your Place in Cyberspace
The cyberspace, like the Universe, is vast, but if you want to make your mark in affiliate marketing, you need to claim your share of the space. Yeah, I am talking about the topmost and very basic of myriad affiliate marketing tools: Your Personal Website. Without your own website, you cannot market your products or entertain visitors (read future customers).
Oh c’mon every affiliate marketer owns a website; you may be tempted to say. But wait a moment, have you just thought over what you just said? If all the zillion affiliate marketers own a website, how are you going to stand out from the crowd? Well, in the answer to this query lies the secret to your success. Your website must be special, attractive, and above all appear professional. It’s not enough to merely have any website; it should make a professional and classy impression on your visitors. Now you see how important this basic affiliate marketing tool is? Invest time, money, planning, forethought, and creativity in creating the most crucial of all affiliate marketing tools.
Cut out the Crap
Please do a favor to your visitors and cut out crappy content from filling your website pages. What benefit is the best of all websites in the world going to yield, if it provides zero entertainment, zero interesting content, and zero value to your visitors? You really think that visitors are dying to buy stuff from you and they will seek your website out of the gigantic cyberspace, even if you do not have any interesting web content? Wake up from this impossible dream buddy; you are all dressed up and have nowhere to go in affiliate marketing if you think so!
Your visitors have got a thousand and one things to do, so they obviously have the attention span of a 3-year-old. Keep them engaged or hooked on your website by luring them with useful articles (articles that provide genuine tips and value to readers). Ensure that you are armed with this second important of all affiliate marketing tools to reap success.
Traffic Magnet
How would the idea of installing a traffic magnet on your website sound to you? Traffic means visitors and visitors mean possible customers. But how do you ensure that your site generates relevant traffic? Link popularity is the magic bullet of affiliate marketing tools and you need to be a bit aggressive here. Search engines love sites that have link popularity and the best way to get this done is absolutely free. Don’t believe me? Use the top 5 article directories to submit high-quality articles for free. All of these article directories have huge traffic and if your article is keyword optimized and provides high-quality information, then it will be noticed by visitors to the directories.
The resource box provides you an opportunity to link back to your site and if your articles are high quality, visitors will be curious to know more and will certainly click on the links to visit your website. See how easy it is?
Pamper Your Visitors
Okay, you succeeded in getting them to your website and read your content. But as an affiliate marketer, you want visitors to proceed to the websites of the products or stuff that you are selling via affiliate marketing, right? What is the best way to lure your visitors to click on those magic links? Pamper them with freebies, exclusive memberships, discounts, newsletters, ezines, etc; it always works!
You now have mastered the 4 basic affiliate marketing tools, but that is not all. There are many more advanced affiliate marketing tools as well; more about them in a later post. Till then, ciao and take care!
To Your Success,
David Wood

Very useful information, Keyanna. The idea of pampering visitors with freebies and discounts is brilliant. I’ll definitely implement this strategy. (spam link removed)

Most affiliates earn little, and that is disclosed up front. The difference here is not a promise about what you will make. It is that you can verify every payout yourself, on a public contract, in about twelve seconds.

“Traffic magnet” means submit articles with a link in the box. Four tools, restated: website, don’t bore people, get links, freebie.
I think what’s being missed if you skim this is the “cut out the crap” section — that’s the one that actually matters and it’s the one people skip past to get to the tools. A website with no reason for anyone to stay is just an empty shop front. That part’s right even if the rest reads a bit dated now.
Ade, all four steps sound reasonable until you cost them out. “Invest time, money, planning, forethought and creativity” in a website is not a forty-five-minute-a-day task, and neither is submitting articles to five directories one by one. This reads like advice for someone with a whole free afternoon, which — respectfully — most of us commenting here do not have.
Ade, I’ll say this having sat on the company side of training material like this for years: “own your website, make it professional” gets repeated in nearly identical language across affiliate programs because so few new affiliates ever get past a template and a login page — it’s genuinely the most common failure point people see internally, more common than anything to do with traffic or tools. Whether that’s because it’s the actual bottleneck for sales, or just the easiest failure to see and coach against from the outside looking at someone’s unfinished page, I honestly can’t tell you, and I’d be careful of anyone from that side who claims they can.
Ade, credit where due — the content-first point is the one thing I’d still tell someone starting out, even years removed from all this. Where it falls down is the traffic magnet section treating article directory submissions like a real strategy. By the time I was building a team that channel was already mostly dead weight.
Samir, thank you for this. Are the directories you mean mostly English/US based? Curious if there’s an equivalent elsewhere worth the time.
Ade, the “invest time, money, planning, forethought and creativity” line is exactly how I’ve talked myself out of launching four things. Endless polishing of the professional-looking website, never actually publishing the crap-free content that’s supposed to go on it. This post would have given me another excuse to keep tinkering, not one less.
Ade, this whole list is 2009 with new labels. We called the traffic magnet thing “article marketing” back then too, same resource-box trick. Article directories mostly don’t move the needle the way they used to — Google changed what counts as a link a long time ago. The “don’t bore your visitor” point’s the only one that hasn’t aged.
