Words are powerful.

Whether spoken or in writ, there is not a more powerful way to influence the minds of men and women than words.  Written or oral, you can take an idea that did not exist just moments before, and create a revolution that changes the face of the earth.

With the power of words, you can turn an enemy into a friend, and create an asset out of what was previously declared as weakness.

You can mend broken hearts, and create clarity and trust – you can make people say:

I trust you

The greatest ideas in the world, are nothing without your ability to communicate those ideas to the world.

Probably the greatest inventor of all time was Nikola Tesla – being the first inventor of all time to hold 300 patents, yet somehow, he is one of the most silent figures in history – barely anyone outside of fringe groups even remember his name.  Yet without Tesla, we would not have AC power, the Tesla Coil is the foundation for all wireless communication, and the list continues almost forever…

…why don’t people remember him?

Because he, like many other brilliant minds with the ideas of sages – couldn’t communicate his message with the world in a way that you understood – so there lies a great man, in all his brilliance, almost forgotten…

…hidden in the whispers of time.

How are you at communicating your ideas?  Does your message come across as ego-centric, hard to understand, or – for some reason – it just doesn’t produce the result that you want?

Many people judge communication by the less important measures – sentence structure, grammar, and other things that bear little reflection at the actual effectiveness of a message.  There is only one way to judge communication, and that is…

…does it produce the results that you want?

A new marketer, not realizing that explaining a product is different than selling it – might spend a majority of his words extolling the virtues of a product.  He might rally around the idea of the ingredients in a vitamin – or maybe the leadership of a company – not realizing:

Nobody cares.

I remember hearing a story that Randy Gage was telling about buying a new car – he walked in to a car lot, went up to a Mustang – and was almost ready to pull out his credit card, make a decision, and buy…

…in your mind, if you imagine – have you ever had a prospect about ready to make a decision – about ready to join, and then – unknowingly, you do something that causes the sale to not be made?  This salesman walked up, and without introduction, went in to a long ‘sales fuss’ about the virtues of the car – the special kind of paint that it had, the horsepower, and how many years it took to design.

Just at the moment when he almost decided not to buy the car – Randy looked at the rambling, poor salesman, and said:

“Look, I’ve got 2 questions here”

“Ok” replied the salesman, expecting something technical.  ”Shoot”

“If I buy this right now, will I look cool, and go fast?”

“Ummm… Yes” he responded – perplexed.

“Then here’s my credit card, can you get me started in an hour?

Of course – I’m paraphrasing the story, and probably messed it up, but you get the idea.  Randy – like a lot of entrepreneurs, can’t tell if a car has a refrigerating unit installed instead of an engine, and could give a crap.

He wants to look cool, and go fast.

What do your prospects want?

Do they want the best compensation plan?  Do they want coded bonuses?  Do they want up-front, residual income?

Not really, no.

That stuff is like the car paint to Randy Gage – only about 1 in 100 people in Network Marketing understand comp plans anyways, and they all argue about what’s better – depending on what they’re in.  Amazingly – unilevels, binaries, coded bonus plans, matrix’s, the dreaded stair step breakaway – they’ve ALL produced huge teams somehow.

Your prospects want to look cool, and go fast – and then, they’ll make a decision to join…

…IMMEDIATELY.

What are the real reasons your prospects will join the team?

Because they want to make money, they have the desire – they dream of it, late at night – staying up, staring into the darkness, and imagining money flowing into their bank account.

Because they want to feel good, be confident, feel loved and appreciated, and have self esteem.

Because they long to sink their toes into the hot sand, looking out over the endless crystal blue ocean in Costa Rica – drinking out of a coconut…

…daily.

And they want it, now – with no hard work, and YOU desire…

…relentlessly

To have your prospects chase you downcorner you at an event, and literally FORCE you to take their credit card – and of course, to get there -

- you have to join first

Don’t you?

-David Wood

P.S.  Leave me your thoughts – and of course – you’re welcome to join, at any time you choose.  You can even come buy my table at the Live the Dream event – and give me you’re credit card there, if you’d like.

Words are just plain powerful David – you can do things when you understand language that seem magical to those that don’t – and…

…they just might be magical, too :-D

So what you’re really saying is concentrate on the dream. Sell the sizzle instead of the steak. They want a hole instead of a drill. Got it. They want to look cool and go fast. Awesome.

Look cool and go fast – I wanna go fast…

…I wanna go fast

Where did I hear that?

There is immense power in words. You’re so right, Dave. The most important about communicating is whether or not it produces the desired result. I’ve never heard of Nikola Tesla. It’s so unfortunate that his name is not popular because of his inability to effectively communicate in a way that people would have understood.

Thanks a bunch for sharing this as it has affected me like you won’t believe.

Nikola Tesla was probably in the top 5 most brilliant people in the last 1000 years – he could have done with maybe a modern PR manager, or by teaming up with someone who understood business though. He actually invented the radio, and a lot of other things that were only credited to him after his death.

Hi David,
Another great post as usual. This one is a definite “put in the first week” of training for the newbie networker. Focusing on what the prospect really wants is so KEY, yet networkers can totally flub over this point. All part of learning but glad I know it because it helps to focus on the right things when building a team.

brilliant my man…

lots of imagery, and truly getting to the point of WHAT YOUR PROSPECTS WANT, which is the ONLY way you’re going to persuade them.

this isn’t about YOU, your comp plan, your business… it’s about what THEY want, which is to LOOK COOL and drink out of coconuts while overlooking the ocean, X, Y, Z… the outcome, result! trust me they care less about the comp plan…

IF you can present your opportunity with the principles and takeaways that are hidden inside this well-crafted blog post by the man DW, you will NEVER have to worry about money again…

this is EXACTLy how I’ve made a fairly decent amount of coin in networking and online….

Bravo Wood!

See you at LTD2 brotha…

Wow David! Again, an amazing post! Words are very powerful. That’s why we should choose our words wisely. Communication is definitely important. It’s the bridge to growth whether for a business or our own lives. It is important in businesses, communities, relationships and so much much. If we’re communicating the right way, we could even influence people and change lives just like what you’re doing David. You’ve changed my life and the way I look at things because you are so good at communicating and speaking your mind. Thanks for that!

Haven’t heard of Tesla yet. He has something that will live on forever but isn’t remembered for it. That’s definitely sad to hear. Great example on why we should be heard.

Thanks for another amazing post David!!!

Great points. Words are the only things that can move mountains, break hearts, and everything in between. That is the hardest part sometimes trying to figure out just the right words to say. Being a prior Marine Corps drill instructor, I always knew the special words to motivate a lazy recruit. Coming into network marketing, I had to seriously learn some new ones. =)

Awesome Message David…

I understand this message completely, because I’ve often found myself wanting to join you or buy your stuff when your videos seemingly had nothing to do with the product or service… but so much so because you were simply having a great time and showing it. That and you’re very compelling with your style of writing.

See you at LTD man!

I remember in my childhood I read a cultural story who have the moral “Control your tongue more than your sword because sword cause injury on body which will be healed after sometimes but some bad words from your tongue can cause injury on heart which will remain forever”

Yes! words are powerful no matter in which sense you will take them they will remain powerful no matter with what intention you will use they will remain powerful. But, I don’t why we humans use powerful things only to serve our evil intentions and not for making world a better place

Hey David,

Thanks for that, was a good read.

Nikola Tesla was a real ‘kinda forgotten’ guy from history. He wasn’t a great communicator, I guess that’s why he wasn’t as popular as he should be. They did say that he had a rivalry with Thomas Edison though.

Many times it is more important how you say the words than the word meaning. So remember the pronunciation and the strength of your voice.

Awesome stuff David. Thanks for taking the time out to write this. :)

Our words really can make the difference between a ‘hot sale’ and a ‘cold lead’. However so many people do not choose their words wisely and then it ends up biting them in the ass when they least expect it. One definitely does not want to be on that side of the fence.

They say actions speak louder than words, but that does not mean words do not hold the power to cause a major shift…
