There are two aspects to a multi level marketing business. One way you make money is by selling a product or service. The other way is by bringing other people into the business who also sell the product or service. You make a little bit of money from each person you bring into the business, as well as everyone each of those people bring in and so on.

Critics of the industry talk about how you make money from the effort of other people. Every business that has employees makes money from the effort of other people. But these people are not slave labor. They also have a business from which they make money from sales and from the effort of others.

Another critique of the industry is that only the first people in any given company can make a lot of money. If you think about this logically, that is absurd. Yes, the people at the top of the company have the opportunity to make more than anyone underneath them. But that does not mean you cannot make millions regardless of when you get started.

MLMs are an excellent way to get high quality products and services to people at low costs. Other types of businesses have people in the middle who need to be paid between the manufacturer and the retail store. The markup between wholesale and retail has to be high to cover the costs of shipping, marketing, sales and all the rest of the expenses. With MLMs, the products get shipped directly to you. You are doing all the effort in sales and marketing. Without these middlemen, you can get your customers a great price.

Some people will sign up in your business just to get a better price on the products. But most will end up introducing a few other people as well. Again, even if these people just purchase products, you will get a small percentage of everything they purchase.

Each person you bring into the company goes underneath you in your company organizational chart. Each person they bring in goes into theirs, but that is part of yours as well. These people are called your downline. Your level in the company is determined by how much products or services you and your downline sell. As you move up in rank, the percentage you make from each person below you increases.

The people above you in the company are called your upline. These people will help you to learn what you need to know to be successful in this business. They have a vested interest in helping you, so you want to take advantage of that. Especially in the beginning, you need people with a proven track record to explain to your friends and family why they should be interested in this business opportunity AND you need leaders who know how to help you take things to the next level and market your business in a way that is ATTRACTIVE to people that you don’t know.

In tough economic times, there have always been companies that try a new way to market their products/services. Sometimes they have a great idea and others are either illegal or not business functional. One very successful marketing strategy has been selling products directly to the consumer. The concept here is to show you advantages and benefits of direct sales – multi level marketing MLM, here are a few success tips.

This is not a new idea. In fact, if you are over 50, you will likely remember your parents having friends over to talk about a business opportunity. This was Amway. There were several others that pioneered the industry, including; Nutri-bio and Shaklee. Before the Internet, information did not travel as quickly, so if you one of the early players in this type of business, stuck with it and worked hard, you are likely very rich now and enjoying the benefits of your labor. However, with the Internet now being a primary player, more companies are making MLM the marketing concept for their business, but equally as many scam artists are offering what may appear to be real home based businesses, but are illegal Pyramid Schemes.

First off all, realize that the legitimate companies that are marketing their products via an MLM are legally structured business models. Every company that directly sells their products/services to the end user is not a scam. Many of the companies trying to get you to spend your money with them may be scams, but the concept is legal and if worked properly, can offer many people an opportunity to make a lot of money. BUT THEY ARE NOT GET RICH SCHEMES!

That being said, do not get into this industry if you think you can make millions overnight. And run as fast as you can away from anyone presenting this idea to you. If you research potential companies to get involved with, try out the products, to determine that they are of good quality, find that there is a compensation program that is good for all that get involved and the company has at least some kind of background success, then go for it. But do the right way!

There are numerous Direct Sales companies that are worth your time and effort. However, there is also a right way to build your business. If you run your home based business like a real business, pretend it is like a retail shop, then you can start building a foundation that will ultimately, when the time is right, allow you to start building your down line of supporters.

Every MLM company must sell something. If you get approached by someone telling you otherwise, that is a very quick way to get into trouble. By definition, you must sell something to be a legal MLM company. Assuming you have found one that you like, treat it as a real business, even if you just wish to do it part time. The first step is to try the products. Not for a day or two, because you are excited about your upcoming millions, but for a couple of months. Get a track record on how the company completes orders. Are all products in stock, or are things being back ordered? Does it take a long time to fulfill your orders or do you get timely deliveries? Do the products turn your skin green, or make you sick to your stomach, or is your skin soft and silky and your stomach is flatter than it was before you started?

Just those answers will help you in so many ways! Then and only then, should you start promoting your products to, well, anyone that will listen. It is imperative that you build a foundation of product users. It also allow you to find out more about the company. Are your customers getting complete orders? Are you commissions correct and on time? How is the Customer Service when your customer has a problem. Would you not do these things if you had a retail store? This is how you build some part time income, assure yourself that the company lives up to the promises you were made and if you are satisfied with their performance, now you can start to talk more about the business opportunity.

Now, if you are just starting out in this industry, and hopefully you are, because the biggest new problem with this industry are people called MLM hoppers. These are people that are always changing companies. Newer, bigger, better, more money offered, etc. Are the reasons that people do this, but again, think about this. If you are always changing, the efforts that you put into the first company is wasted. Here you spent time building customers and started a down line, and you built everyone to believe that this company is the next coming. Now, you call everyone to tell them about your new deal and a couple of things happen. You instantly lose credibility. You also, likely start alienating friends and relatives because they think you are a flake. So, if you start something, finish it for a change.

Eliminate your fears. If you find a company that has some successful history, has great products/services, has a compensation plan that can earn you good money and is fair to the down line people, get in and give it a shot. But, make it a legitimate shot. If you decide to get into the direct selling industry, even if it is to be part time, then devote some time to it and do it properly. Build the retail base, get some happy customers and then build your mega company. Do it the same way the Bill Gates built Microsoft or the way that Ray Kroc built McDonalds. This will give you what you want out of the business and you will earn money, enjoy some time freedom and likely have some fun.
