Today’s post is a little different.  This is a tribute to the innovators of our industry and the creators of the original MLM systems that almost every successful MLM organization in the world has been based off of.  They have the largest, most stable organizations in the history of our industry, and are more than three times the size of the next closest MLM giant.

That’s right my friends, business history was changed and inspired by none other than Amway.

(No, I’m not in Amway)…

but I think that they’re pretty cool.

If you’re in the MLM industry and you don’t appreciate what Amway has done for our industry and Free Enterprise, it’s time to get educated and inspired by the most powerful ‘Dream Builders‘ in history.

When I was in my early 20′s, I got a hold of a tape series from the early 80′s called ‘Pigs Don’t Know Pigs Stink‘ that was done by an Amway distributor named Dave Severn.  Ever since then, this has been my favorite audio I’ve ever listened to, and I’ve probably listened to it 200 times.  When I built my first successful organization offline, I used to listen to this tape driving to every meeting I did for almost 2 years, just to get pumped.

I just popped it in the other day again, and decided it was time for the world to hear.  This is going to probably be the only place you’ll ever find this, because I had to transfer it from a ratted out 1980′s audio tape to MP3… It’s about 3-4 hours, but you’ll be inspired to an entirely new level if you take the time to listen, because what Amway has done better than any company in the world has been to ‘Build the Dream’…

Listen In By Hitting The ‘Play’ Button Now.  Enjoy:

I wanted to just take a minute to thank Dave Severn for producing one of the most inspirational audios that I’ve ever heard in my life. There were many times when the only thing that kept me inspired was listening to an old ratted out Amway tape on the way to someones home, and that’s what our industry is all about.

Inspiration.

Speaking the dream.

Having a vision.

Moving people.

Is your dream BIG enough?

-David Wood

P.S. Be sure to leave your thoughts on this one and share it. I think it will open your mind a bit to what’s possible in our industry. Dave Severn has been living the dream in our industry since the early 80′s, and now has more than a half million people in his organization. What can you do?

Hey David,

Thanks for setting this up and allowing us to learn from this great leader. It’s a great reminder that sometimes we don’t know what we don’t know. God gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason. Listening more than talking will get you where you want to go much faster.

Thanks again,

David,

Amway was my introduction to network marketing a long way back. This is actually quite a funny story now…. I was easily persuaded then so my mates convinced me that I had been kidnapped by a cult and I opted out after 6 months. :) The reasons they thought it was a cult were misguided & numerous of course but included the fact that everyone wore black suits (well the guys anyway), carried black leather bound organizers AND were being brainwashed by a series of audio tapes!

Thank goodness I know a whole lot better these days but actually what I most loved about Amway were those tapes. I missed them when I left and I played the ones I had bought so much that eventually they had to be thrown away.I remember the recording you have featured in your post because it was such a great title!

In my opinion Amway managed to be great because of the very personal development system they gave their people and while a lot has changed in the industry, the need for personal development to be successful remains the same. I look forward to re-listening to the recording. Thank you.

Ha ha Marcus…

…that was my favorite thing about Amway too. Those old tapes are awesome man. I used to have a gigantic box full of them and lost it in one of my moves. One day I’m going to go on E-bay and buy up boatloads of Amway tapes, I think they’re better a lot of times than stuff you pay a couple hundred bucks for.

Hey Dave,

This awesome (Amway) audio by Dave was so inspiring and full of words of wisdom. After listening to the audio not once, but twice, I was reminded why I joined your team. Although, I am still in the process of setting up my MLSP System, I am already excited about having you as my leader and mentor.

Please keep up your great leadership and I look forward to working directly with you.

David,

Yes, it’s a classic, and has just be rereleasd on CD. I can let you know if it’s any different after I hear it. I am still with World Wide Dreambuilders because of those tapes and cds, the leadership training and mentoring. I am just tired of trolling malls for prospects. John Maxwell is now working closely with WWDB because he believes World Wide’s model exemplifies leadership and integrity by example.

I am excited by the new developments within MLSP and the way it’s combining online and offline tactics and can be used by anyone building a business online.

I really look forward to meeting you.

David Wood February 15, 2010 at 12:17 am

Lol… Trolling malls is probably the worst strategy that I learned from Amway, but I have to admit I still sponsored a bunch of people like that. It just wasn’t fun.

I think on a local basis, it’s a lot more effective to follow Brian Tracy’s business networking strategies and connect with movers in the community. When I started doing that in my last company, my local growth took off. In malls, you tend to meet people who hang out in malls – a bunch of broke people in their low to mid 20′s (or teenagers), and it just isn’t the best foundation long term.

Dave-
I made a few pennies in Quixtar, but the education I gained while learning how to truly build a huge network marketing business is priceless. So many people try to discount what Amway has done in and for our industry, yet almost all network marketing businesses mirror some part and portion of how Amway operates. I’m not with them now, but I certainly do recognize the contributions this industry giant has made to our industry, and to my own network marketing career:)

BTW, my favorite traveling CD was “Oh, Harry.” :)

David Wood February 15, 2010 at 1:25 pm

I just read your other post, I was a mall spear chucker, too, LOL!!

I never had an issue with Amway, my upline Diamond, or any of the other people associated with the business. I never had a problem with the fact that my upline made money from selling training, support and motivational materials(hello, it’s a business).

My issues related specifically to a few people in my immediate upline and some members of my cross line team. It was a good move, though, because it opened me up to the other opportunities and marketing strategies network marketing has to offer. I now know that Amway is not the opportunity for me, not because they’re an evil organization. Quite the contrary, I think Amway is still a great opportunity. The key is figuring out if Amway (or any business) is a great opportunity for you. I know people who got in Amway within the last 3-5 years and are crushing it, so all the talk of market saturation is crap. If a person makes a decision of quality to succeed, backed by the development of applicable skills and work, they will make it in any business opportunity they choose.

That is one of my favorites as well. They are part of the “Classics”. Contrary to what the world thinks, Amway does have the most stable businesses on the planet and yep, some of the largest. Larry Winters team alone is right at 100,000 people. Now that is VOLUME!!

We can all learn a lot from Amway – instead of ‘bashing’ them, why not build relationships and learn how they keep people in their team for 20-30 years? THAT’S the power of MLM

David, If I am not mistaken the Severns were in the Britt organization. I think we listened to this as a tape of the week back in the early 80′s maybe 1983. If it wasn’t this guy it was another Amway Diamond. No matter, this is great content and may just make an article post.

I wish I had saved or better yet converted all of our 1000+ tapes from those days. Nobody shares like that anymore without charging $20 for the download.

The best part about the education process involving Amway was that everyone in the family from my little brothers all the way to my sister and mom, were suddenly glued to the company presentation, just because it could impact everyone in family! I believe Amway is an excellent family-business. E-1 Excellent Post, David Wood!

Awesome CD. I too remember the early 80′s. But I was a distributor for Shaklee. They had some great tapes too. But I do not believe any company has better tapes than Amway. My neighbor is in Quixtar, and is continually trying to get me in with him. Not interested in Amway or Shaklee anymore, but they were/are great companies. Inspirational is an understatement. Thanks David, I truly appreciate you sharing this cd.

Dave Severn is great. I personally heard this talk in 1982. WWDB had lots of great speakers like Jim Head, Ron Puryear Jack Daugherty and my favorite Dave Severn. This was truly cutting edge stuff back then but still applies today more than ever. A lot of people frown on Amway but there has never been a more successful MLM in history.

Reply

Mike Willett May 13, 2010 at 12:46 pm

Let’s give credit where it is due. Dexter Yeager, of Amway fame and one of the biggest in MLM ever, started the support system, not really the Amway company. Dexter started with a 78rpm record, if anyone remembers those, and built a huge support system that is now legend in the industry. I was fortunate enough to be one under Dex, and got to spend a lot of time with him and soak up his amazing wisdom. The tools his company produced, the system he built, is almost single handedly responsible for Amway’s (Quixtar)success. Since leaving Quixtar, the thing I miss the most is Dexter.

Reply

David Wood November 13, 2010 at 3:14 am

Interesting perspective Mike.

I’ve always wanted to meet Dexter Yager, that guy is a genius, and I agree.

Without Dex, I’m not even sure if Amway would be around still. He changed the entire industry.

Thanks for posting this. A quick story:

I was a distributor in the early 90s. My (eventual) sponsor invited me out to a restaurant for coffee. After my 2-minute intro, I was interested but skeptical. My sponsor and his brother (his sponsor), were preparing to drive me home after this and were going through tapes in the car trunk figuring out what to play me. My sponsor picked up one, showed it to his brother, who nodded, and said, “Well, it’ll either blow him in or blow him out.”

The tape was “Pigs…”. It changed my life. Although I dropped out several years later, I am a better person for my participation in Amway, and a smarter person for having experienced Mr. Severn’s powerful speech. For anyone who doesn’t know the back story of how/why Dave was on stage that night, ask your sponsor. That’s a great story itself.

Respectfully,
A former distributor

It’s SO hard to make that break when you’re dependant on that job for your lifestyle but for me, once I made the break things just seemed to fall into place.

Friends and family comment that ‘I’m lucky’ not to work 9-5 fulltime but it just comes down to choices really doesn’t it?

Every year WORLDWIDE DREAMBUILDERS has 4 Major Events. We just celebrated FREE ENTERPRISE in Denver Colorado. Dave Severn and many other BIG BIZ Builders spoke. Thousands of people were there. Bill Britt was the BEST! Our group got to hang out with Bill Britt and we talked to him about Saving America with FREE ENTERPRISE. I have pics of me hanging out with Bill Britt. I’ll email them to you if you dont believe me. I have met Ron Puryear, Jimmy Head, and several other TOP LEADERS in AMWAY. The next Major Event is DREAMNIGHT. Round-Table dinners with DIAMOND guest speakers. It is in January. They are doing them all over the Country. If you are interested in going to a DREAMNIGHT near you, then contact me at 805-245-3604. My main group is going to the one in Bakersfield California. Ron & Georgia Lee Puryear will be speaking along with Glen & Joya Baker. Start 2011 with “YOUR DREAM”. My upline DIAMOND, Ed Grosboll recorded a 20 minute business overview that you can listen to if you call this 3 step number; (step1: 1-641-527-4212)(step2: 8519818#)(step3: 411#). Ed is good friends with Dave Severn and all the WORLDWIDE DREAMBUILDERS. I am building the business with the BEST of them. If you like what you hear then call me or email me.(krazytre138@yahoo.com)The door is open for those who know how to use it. FREEDOM!!

David Wood November 13, 2010 at 3:10 am

Hey buddy – you should talk to Ed about this, calling a 3 step number is way too complicated, if you sign up for a $6 per month voicemail account people can call straight in with no pin code and listen directly to the message – it’s way more effective.

Reply

Trevor Guerra November 13, 2010 at 5:55 am

We have a special communication tool called COMMUNIKATE. We can access many different training recordings by changing the 3rd step. The 411# will guide you to a web link to see a visual plan. If someone doesnt have access to the internet, they can use; (step3: 704#). Sometimes we have LIVE phone conferences also with hundreds of people calling in. If you have a COMMUNIKATE account through WORLDWIDE DREAMBUILDERS, then you can send phone messages to your upline’s COMMUNIKATE account without bothering them on their phone. If they like the message, they can send it out to the entire WORLDWIDE organization. There are many other uses with COMMUNIKATE. Every tuesday night, Ed does a LIVE WEBCAST also. Just send an email to lgd@katewwdb.com. Ask for access to the EARLY SHOW or LATE SHOW. The 1st show is from 6-7:00pm. The last show is from 8-9:00pm.(Pacific Time) They will send a link to your email. Just open the link and watch. They also do a spanish show from 7-8:00pm. Sorry if this is complicated. We try to keep it simple but we have a lot more tools than the average Network Market. I would love to show you a plan personally over the phone Dave. If you want, call me some time and let’s talk BIZ.$$

THANKS DAVE FOR GETTING THIS INFO OUT THERE. If anyone wants a HARD-COPY of this CD or many others like it, you can only get them from the wwdb.com website. Thanks for posting this, I love this tape, I have been looking for a copy of Dave’s seminar, the tape number was RP 216 and it has some wonderful research on it I have been trying to find, you know anyone that may have that tape?

Ya, this is an awesome cd which I just recorded it. LOL I can’t get it might as will record it, hope you don’t mind Dave Severn, your awesome and you too, Dave Wood! Amway has great products made in USA, just use it to support the free-enterprise system even if you don’t want to build the business. Why send your money to CHINA! BTW, I came from there. I am all about FREEDOM and lets keep AMERICA free. Calgary, AB; Canada

I am still in Amway and WWDB, have not been active for years. We still buy wholesale. My upline Diamond is Greg Duncan, and Dave and Jan Severn always came and spoke every year at Gregs Family union in Portland. It was always a thrill to see them.
